Activision's Next Three Marvel Games
2008-08-01 13:28:10

Hi everyone,

Been awhile, hasn't it? In fact, it's been so long since I've blogged here, I should probably reintroduce myself: I'm Chris Baker, the Interactive Content Coordinator at Marvel Studios, and to put my job in the simplest terms (there are so many aspects to it!), I approve a lot of the stuff that goes into Marvel videogames.

Lately, I've been doing a lot of approvals for Activision titles, and with the company holding its big press conference recently, as well as issuing a press release, I'm thrilled that I'm finally able to speak to some of them.

You probably already know about "Spider-Man: Web of Shadows," which was announced back in April. It's looking great, and as a Spidey fan, getting to play this before the rest of the world is one of the true benefits of this job. A demo was presented at the press event and went over quite well.

Also, they were finally able to announce "Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion," which is also looking pretty sweet. I've been working closely with Activision and Vicarious Visions a lot, and let me tell you, these guys are as passionate as it gets. I wish I could tell you everything about the game...but I want those fine folks to still like me, and spoiling the game for everyone at this stage isn't something they're very interested in.

Finally, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" was also announced. No screens or anything yet, but there is news that it will feature the voice and likeness of Hugh Jackman. It's also still more than nine months out and already pretty much my favorite X-Men game ever. I have no doubt it'll rank among the greatest Super Hero games of all time.

So, I'm curious... What do you all think of all this? Any questions you want answered? (Well...that I can answer?) I'd love to hear 'em.

Your pal,
C-Bake
YYYYEEEEEEESSSS!!!!
Back at long last!

Hey C-Bake, do you remember those questions I wanted to ask months ago? :)

Posted by Aziroth on 2008-07-26 14:46:20
Had a bit of trouble, but now..
I can surf the site with little trouble now.

Anyways, I think all of this is good news. Thanks for the update C-Bake.

Hi Aziroth...
Of course I remember the questions... I think a few have been answered since then. Remind me.

Hopefully some other True Believers will shoot some questions my way...

Posted by Marvel_Interactive on 2008-07-27 23:41:24
A reposting of those questions.
Request for interview with Marvel Interactive
With the advent of Marvel Universe Online's cancellation, I was wondering if you could answer some questions. (Questions 1-3 and 11 concern Marvel Universe Online. However, I have updated some questions since some of them were answered by recent news.)

1, Is there any chance you guys might bring this game back to life? Particularly considering the sources at IGN suggesting that DC is trying to come out with its own mmo?

2. If the theoretical concept for Marvel Universe Online were to be resurrected, is there any chance you guys could bring it out for the PS3, Wii, and X-Box 360 as well as for the PC?

3. If (and this is a hypothetical big if here) Marvel Universe Online were to be resurrected and released, could you guys consider creating some kinda ultimate limited edition bundle collector kit to go with it? (Though this could be a neat idea for any Marvel game) :D

4. (Original fourth question answered by MUA 2's allowing the choosing of a side for the Civil War)

5. Will there ever be a Secret Invasion game in the future?

6. Would you guys consider developing/making an X-Men Legends 3 in the future?

7. If given the option, would Marvel consider doing like a real-time strategy game?

8. Would it be possible to make a game based on the Annihilation or World War Hulk arcs?

9. What's it like working at Marvel Interactive (if I am not being too nosey)?

10. Out of all the games developed for Marvel (I.E. X-Men Legends, the Spiderman games, Marvel Ultimate Alliance), which one was your favorite (in terms of developing/testing)?

11. I was randomly browsing Wikipedia the other day when I came accross an article on an old Marvel Super Heroes RPG, and was wondering. If Marvel Universe Online could be salvaged, would it be possible to structure it somewhat like this RPG (Which I shall provide the link for below.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Super_Heroes_(role-playing_game)

12 (New): Recently, a "developer" by name of Dairian615 created a thread (copy and past link below to access) gathering inquiries and feedbacks on possible concepts for Marvel Universe Online (a version of which mentioned by the author of the thread below).

What is your take on this?

Poll asking: "What one feature do you want to see in a Marvel MMO?"
http://www.marvel.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=125081&start=0

13(New): Will there be a game/RPG that allows you to play through the events of Both Annihilation and other Cosmic arcs?

14(New): Just out of curiosity, could you guys host/start an interesting contest where True Believers could send in suggestions/ideas/fan-art of custom characters, and the suggested character that wins would be implemented in a game?

With great appreciation and gratitude to Marvel for making such great video games over the years, and for the hosts of this blog taking the time to read the input.

Thanks alot! ^_^

Cutting Edge?
First, I have to say I love the Marvel movies, but I feel that the games really lack any greatness. The only game that I can say I really enjoyed thus far has been the Spiderman games, and I have bought nearly all of them (save the new Ironman game).

Personally, I would like to see Marvel do something like what Lucasarts is doing with The Force Unleashed by developing an unknown character, and by making a point to explore and use cutting edge technology (and I must say that Lucasarts only has Knights of The Old Republic to flaunt as its only good game). Also, I feel that Marvel really hasn't catered to the hardcore gamers. I'd like to see game that could compete with games like God of War, Halo, or Bioshock. When I play Marvel games I feel that there is only one right way of playing (Ultimate Alliance, Xmen Legends, Fantastic Four, etc), and there isn't ever anything new that hasn't been done before.

So if I had to ask a question it would be: Will Marvel ever be making any games that explore strong character development, while also using innovative and exciting gameplay? (sorry if I'm being harsh, I know making games probably aren't the easiest thing around).

I'd like to see a game that mixes KOTOR's character development and story (Fable has better character development, but I feel that Fable is too focused around it to really be an awesome game), Assassin's creed's gameplay, Heavenly Sword's gameplay, God of War's gameplay, and Halo and Bioshock's graphics and environments (possibly even gameplay, but I don't think that the interesting stuff in the Marvel Universe doesn't lend itself to First Person Shooters). This might be asking for too much, but you should always dream big.

super interactive game!
this is most likely is never going to happen, but i have been thinking about a video game (marvel or any other)that places you in vitural reality with some type of helmet and gloves, to make you run around and actully move and hit stuff. this would be hard for marvel thanks to they're powers, but also easy thanks to heros like the siver surfer, where most of the time he is on his surf bourd. this is when i ask the questions.

1. will there ever be a fully interactive home stationed video game (with the helmet and gloves thing) or will you have to go to a specialy desigened room to play and will it cost alot of money $$$?

2. has anyone ever pitched this idea to marvel and goten good feed back?

3. is there really (most likely not) a spiderman vs Marvel zombies video game? is there ever going to be a Marvel zombies video game?

4. i am hoping one day there will be a marvel universe video game that is free roaming and you pick your charecter, and basicly do what you want.

that's basicly it.

Posted by side_kick12 on 2008-08-02 04:47:09
you guys need to make a marvel universe game where you choose a charecter play they're life story, from begining to end and if you have a wii or xbox 360 you could go on the internet and download the stage in they're life. like you play as captain america and play from his first mission to his last moment fighting ironman. or you could free roam as a hero or villian and complete small missions to get upgrades or some type of reward. maybe you could play in different universes like marvel zombies or house of M. you should should make it M for mature so little kids won't run around confused why spiderman is trying to bite they're neck. but maybe you could save that for the sequal. maybe this would be too hard but it would also be cool if it was multiplayer too. of couse MUA 2 is gonna be awsome but if it was free roaming with a 3rd person look it would be heaven for me.

MAKE A MARVEL ZOMBIES COSTUME FOR MUA 2!!!

Hmm.
The flagging feature on these blogs aught to only be available to those who log in, and it should leave a note on who flags what and when. The reason I am suggesting this is because I am getting tired of this malevolent person (or persons) going about deliberately flagging every comment in the blog. Hopefully, by changing the structure, admins can keep the destructive hooligans from disrupting the blogs by abusing the flaggign feature.

On topic, are there any plans for any Marvel games involving the sue of the Wii Balance Board?

oops*
Meant use in that last post.

Platforms?
Glad to have you back, C-Bake. Simple question, really. Do you know (or can you reveal) what platforms these games will be on? I'd especially like to see these titles on PSP (big fan of handhelds). I know Web of Shadows is already PSP bound, will the other two make it?

Speaking of which, a while ago, I thought a Sega executive in an interview (darned if I can't find it now) said The Incredible Hulk was coming for the PSP, confirming they are working on it. Any way you could check the status of that?

Thanks, C-Bake, hope to see you checking in more often :-D

Gamer behind the times
is ultimate alliance 2 and web of shadows only coming out for the new systems or will they also be released for the last generation?(ps2, x-box, gamecube)

Where did the responses go?
Aside from the question in the subject field, are there any plans for a She-Hulk game?

Posted by Aziroth on 2008-08-09 08:11:21
Seconded
I would just like to second the above comment. Though I love Marvel, with a few notable exceptions (spider 2) the games aren't all that spectacular recently. Though they look great, they are kind of like the old platform games of the NES, where there is only one real way to play the game.

Liscences question
I've seen plenty of discussions about this issue, and I guess this is the better place to ask:

How exactly does Marvel liscence its characters for videogames?

Because, you see, there's Activision's MUA: Fusion coming up. It has among its confirmed characters some that have been liscenced to other companies, including some heavy hitters like Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and the Fantastic Four.

The 2 main theories I've heard is that: 1) Activision had to pay the other companies in order to use those characters and 2) Marvel is liscencing the characters both individually (especially the ones with movies coming up) and then there's a separate liscence for the Marvel universe as a whole, with certain restrictions (the "conflicting" characters can't look exactly like their movie versions, they can't be featured in the cover, etc.).

Thanks for at least reading this ;)

Ultimate Alliance
Will Ultimate Alliance 2 be out for the pc like the previous game, or is it console only?

I'm a HUGE spider-man fan, and when I heard about Web of shadows, I had to go to gamestop and pre-order it!
I got some questions about some games I wanna buy,
Hulk looks like fun, but from what I heard it really sucks, does it really?
and I wanna get Iron Man, but when I heard it was'nt free-roam like SM2 & SM3, should I still get it?

Please help me out here!

music
I am sure you have heard all sorts of questions about gameplay and story lines and other things my question is about the music of these games. I believe that the music in the game should reflect upon the heros and villans in games. I understand that an orchestra can blend in all types of emotion into your game but I always imagined Spider-man swinging through the city to teenage rebellion music or The Punisher Beating some guy up to some grunge like music. It's like when we were watching the Iron Man movie and Tony is working on his car playing suicidal tendencies we get a real insight on him. What im trying to say is maybe our games can have all sorts of music that can be played at all times for major parts of the game minor parts cut scenes and other things. Though the possibilitys with that are endless with the current gaming systems. You could download different music online for for free roam around the city. Could you consider it? I would really appreciate it. Have a good one everyone

Bring back Marvel Universe online!
Awesome! Can you tell me when those games will be out in stores?
And, can you give Marvel Universe Online a 2nd chance, and un-cancel it?
And finally, Which, of all the Marvel videogames would you rate #1 for awesomest?
Thanks!

Spider-Man: WOS
Heya C-Bake. Good to have you back. I was wondering, will there be any unlockable content for WOS? I think it makes the game sooooo much more fun when you have alternate costumes/outfits to choose from. Also, are any other characters playable? I see they put "Xbox Live" at the top of the box, so can you team Spidey up with a partner and do team stuff online? Thanks for your time dude.

movie games!!!!!!!!!
I LOVED xml 1 &2 Loved marvel ultimate, can't wait for the 2nd one. but these movies games kill me i hate stop letting the game makers hurt the marvel name. iron man worst game ever. ff game bad hulk was ok. x-men the movie game so crapy and i love marvel games that's why i even buy these crapy ones. i love the old school x-men for super nes and max carnage for sega. please look into what these ppl are doing before they smack the marvel logo on the front of that game. and can i get a mature game that would be key. maybe some x-force in a xml format. new x-force in like a year or two with some mortal kombat like finishers on bosses and have a different one for each person. it'd be tight! can't wait for the new spidy with logan and cage awesome that's what i like to see

Posted by kentonclutter on 2008-10-13 19:33:10
what i just saw
i just read a post about being a villian or a hero and having an open world and being able to play online. villians can do little things like rob banks and try to fight off the cops or big missions like take over the world just like the heros. dc is doing this it's in the early stages. i'm not a big dc fan but this is a great idea. marvel needs to piggyback this idea i love marvel please do the same type of game
